Study: New coronavirus variant of infectious when the original Virus

A currently the world’s dominant variation of the novel Coronavirus affecting a study, according to the human cells more easily than the original Virus from China. On Thursday in the journal “Cell” published study indicates that the now mutated Virus could be contagious than in China encountered archetype. Whether it is for the people of dangerous, however, is unclear.

For the study, researchers at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and Duke University in North Carolina with a research group at the UK’s University of Sheffield came together and analyzed the genome sequences of Sars-CoV-2. You have already found out in April that the Virus variant D614G infected due to a single but decisive Change in a Protein to more cells under laboratory conditions.

Patients with a mutated Virus is not severe ill

After criticism of the first study and, at the invitation of the “Cell”, added the researchers are now additional studies: Among other things, they analyzed the data of 999 British patients who had to be treated for Covid-19 in the hospital. They found that patients with the variant D614G contributed more virus particles in it but on the severity of the disease has changed nothing.

In laboratory tests, the ability of the virus variant to infect the human cells was three to six Times higher. “It looks as if it was a more powerful Virus,” said Erica Ollmann Saphire from the La Jolla Institute for Immunology, which was one of the experiments.

US virologist: The new variant is now the pandemic

“I think the data show that the Virus can replicate with the Mutation better and may have a high viral load can bring,” said US presidential Advisor Anthony Fauci of the study to the journal “Journal of the American Medical Association”. He pointed but at the same time that a confirmation of the Thesis are still missing. Uncertain is whether the variant trigger more severe diseases or not.

In a comment to the study, the virologist Nathan Grubaugh of the Yale School of Public Health, the fact was wrote, “the new variant is now the pandemic”. For the people, but only a little to change the fact: Even if this could influence the development of a drug or a vaccine, “we do not expect that D614G will change our control measures, or the individual aggravate infections.”

Peru surpasses 10,000 coronavirus deaths: health ministry

Peru surpassed 10,000 deaths from the coronavirus on Thursday, the health ministry said, a day after the government began easing a national lockdown in a bid to revive the economy.

The number of deaths rose to 10,045, an increase of 185 in the last 24 hours, while the number of people infected rose to 292,004, the ministry said.

Peru is Latin America’s second worst-hit country after Brazil, where according to official figures more than 60,000 people have died from the disease.

Peru’s victims include 71 health workers and 153 police officers, according to officials.

Among the latest of Peru’s victims is the leader of the Awajun indigenous people, Santiago Manuin, who died Wednesday aged 63.

Manuin was recognized with Spain’s Queen Sofia Prize for his crusade in defense of the Amazon and indigenous rights.

US marks record 53,069 coronavirus cases in 24 hours: tracker

Credit: CC0 Public Domain

The US notched more than 53,000 new COVID-19 cases in 24 hours Thursday, a tally by Johns Hopkins University showed, a new one-day record as infections surge around the country.

The Baltimore-based university’s tracker showed 53,069 more cases as of 8:30 pm (0030 Friday GMT), bringing the total number of cases since the pandemic reached the United States to 2,735,339.

The university also recorded a further 649 fatalities, bringing the total death toll to 128,677.

The second consecutive day of a record-high case count came as the United States—the hardest-hit country in the world in the coronavirus pandemic—headed into the long July Fourth holiday weekend.

Florida is a key focus of public health experts worried about a surge in southern and western US states and it now has more than 169,000 cases.

Governor Ron DeSantis blamed the rise on “social interactions” among young people gathering at parties, beaches, bars, swimming pools and elsewhere, as well as a more “robust” testing program.

In Texas, where more than 2,500 people have died, Governor Greg Abbott ordered people in counties with 20 or more cases to wear masks, and banned gatherings of more than 10 people.

Paraguay controls coronavirus, while its neighbors struggle

As nearby nations grapple with uncontrolled spread of the novel coronavirus, the poor, landlocked nation of Paraguay appears to be controlling the disease, with just a few thousand confirmed cases and a few dozen deaths.

Along with Paraguay’s relative isolation, experts credit the country with creating a network of quarantine centers in military academies, motels, and religious institutions where citizens arriving home must isolate for at least 14 days and pass two consecutive coronavirus tests before being able to move about the country freely.

With only 7 million people, a stagnant economy, high poverty and a weak public health system, Paraguay moved to slow coronavirus in March by closing borders and imposing the quarantine restrictions, along with closing schools and public events and declaring a nighttime curfew.

Some 8,500 have passed through the quarantine system already, some complaining about poor food and housing and the requirements that the 14-day clock starts again for everyone in a shelter if one person tests positive for the coronavirus. There are also complaints of delays from many of the 15,000 Paraguayans still waiting outside the country in neighboring nations like Brazil and Argentina.

“It was a horrible experience the entire time,” said a 21-year-old who insisted on speaking anonymously out of fear of being discriminated against for having been infected. “There were 100 men together in my (quarantine) center, of all ages. When I arrived home my mother was excited to see me but didn’t touch me. She first disinfected me all over with alcohol and a home remedy. I bathed and only then did she hug me.”

Paraguay built two hospitals to handle a possible surge in coronavirus cases, but a recent visit by an Associated Press journalist showed both are empty, which authorities cited as evidence of their success in slowing the spread of the virus.

“Striking a balance is a great challenge for the government,′ presidential adviser Federico González said. “The shelters are full and the population is safe.″

Observers worry, however, that the uncontrolled surge of cases in Brazil, many close to Paraguay’s border, means the smaller country’s success may be short-lived.

Adding to concerns are a predicted 5% drop in gross domestic product for an economy that was already struggling, and a health system that remains unprepared for a large-scale epidemic.

Coronavirus symptoms update: French man suffers this sexual symptom – what is it?

Coronavirus symptoms seem to be bringing about new and unusual signs almost weekly. A French man who contracted the virus suffered a condition affecting his penis.

  • Bed bugs: Two warning signs of an infestation

The novel coronavirus could cause a condition known as priapism after a French man suffered with the condition.

The unidentified 62-year old suffered with the painful condition while receiving care in hospital for a severe bout of COVID-19.

Known as priapism the condition affects a man’s penis.

What is priapism?

Priapism is a long-lasting painful erection said the NHS.

The health site continued: “It can cause permanent damage to your penis if not treated quickly.

“Priapism may get better on its own or within two hours.

“Don’t apply ice packs or cold water to your penis this can make things worse.”

The Mayo Clinic defines priapism as a “prolonged erection of the penis”.

As the American Urological Association describes, there are two general types of priapism.

Ischemic priapism in which the blood can’t leave the penis and non-ischemic priapism in which blood flow to the penis isn’t regulated well.

The French man’s condition is believed to have been caused by trapped blood in his penis.

It was found to be full of blood clots when it was drained by medics.

  • Hair loss treatment: A natural product to increase hair growth

The case of the French man suffering from this condition as a possible side effect of COVID-19 is believed to be the first time.

The patient was in intensive care after spending two weeks on a ventilator, however, it’s been suggested he has made a full recovery.

Medical experts at Centre Hospitalier de Versailles in Le Chesnay wrote about the main article in The American Journal of Emergency Medicine.

Intensive care doctor, Dr Myriam Lamamri, explained how blood clotting caused by COVID-19 has been extensively reported during the current pandemic.

Pulmonologist Dr Wayne Tsuang said: “We’re seeing a higher rate of blood clots in patients hospitalised with COVID-19.

“It’s not clear yet how common clots are in people with mild symptoms who are at home.”

Blood clots are often associated with serious health complications including strokes.

Scientists are trying to understand and learn more about why the clots are occurring in coronavirus patients.

Unusual coronavirus symptoms: What are they?

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can cause a wide range of signs and symptoms. The most common are fever, dry cough and tiredness. Other symptoms include shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, muscle aches, chills, sore throat, headache, or chest pain. But COVID-19 can also cause symptoms you might not expect, including:

Gastrointestinal symptoms. COVID-19 might cause mild gastrointestinal symptoms, including a loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. These symptoms might only last one day. Some people with COVID-19 have diarrhea and nausea prior to developing fever and respiratory symptoms.

Loss of smell or taste. COVID-19 might cause a new loss of smell or taste—without nasal congestion. This typically lasts nine to 14 days. Some research suggests that loss of smell or taste might be an early predictor of COVID-19.

Skin changes. Younger people with less severe COVID-19 might develop painful, itchy lesions on their hands and feet that resemble chilblains, an inflammatory skin condition. Sometimes called COVID toes, this symptom typically lasts about 12 days. COVID-19 also has been reported to cause small, itchy blisters, more commonly appearing before other symptoms and lasting about 10 days. Others might develop hives or a rash with flat and raised lesions. These skin changes might last a week, appear at the same time as other symptoms and are associated with more severe infections.

Confusion. COVID-19 also has been reported to cause confusion in older people, especially those with severe infections.

Eye problems. COVID-19 might cause eye problems such as enlarged, red blood vessels, swollen eyelids, excessive watering and increased discharge. The infection also might cause light sensitivity and irritation. These symptoms are more common in people with severe infections.

Disinformation on coronavirus ‘massive’ says report

From quack cures to smoking cigarettes to ward off COVID-19, disinformation circulating online about the coronavirus has been massive, a report by five European fact-checking organisations, including AFP, has found.

As the virus reached its peak across Europe in March and April, “false and sometimes dangerous advice about supposed cures” spread rapidly, from gargling with vinegar to drinking disinfectant, said the analysis, which covers the UK, Italy, Spain, Germany and France.

Conspiracy theories also ran wild, the authors said, including that the virus was man-made, that it was linked to the 5G network, with the Microsoft founder Bill Gates a particular focus of paranoia.

“Like a super villain in a James Bond movie, the billionaire is portrayed as someone who wants to ‘control people’, at any cost,” the report found.

In France many claimed that “Gates wants to take advantage of COVID-19 to implant ‘microchips’ through vaccines in order to label and geolocalise the population.”

Hydroxychloroquine, the anti-malaria drug which has not been proven to help beat the coronavirus, was heavily promoted as a possible silver bullet in the UK, Spain and in France, where one of the country’s leading virologists also promoted the use of the drug.

It was also touted as potential cure by US President Donald Trump and Tesla chief Elon Musk.

The World Health Organization warned in February that the “infodemic” of false information about the virus—which has so far claimed more than half a million lives worldwide—was making fighting it more complicated.

False rumours about helicopters spreading pesticide or disinfectant, which appear to have started in Italy, spread to Spain, Germany and Britain.

The report also found that theories often dovetailed with local concerns, with false claims often centring on pets in Britain and on migrants in Germany.

While the wave of disinformation has ebbed in recent weeks, many false cures and theories are still circulating on social media, it said.

The analysis—based on 654 articles published in March and April—was conducted by AFP, Pagella Politica/Facta in Italy, in Spain, Full Fact in the UK and Correctiv in Germany.

Pfizer's coronavirus shot shows promise by triggering immune response

Experimental coronavirus vaccine from Pfizer triggered levels of antibodies up to THREE TIMES greater than those seen in recovered patients, early data shows

  • Researchers randomly gave 45 healthy volunteers either a low dose, a medium dose or a high dose of a coronavirus vaccine, or a placebo
  • Those who received the vaccine were given two shots, except the high dose group after half developed fever
  • The vaccine generated levels of neutralizing antibodies between 1.8 and 2.8 times greater than those seen in recovered patients
  • No life-threatening side effects were seen and Pfizer hopes to start a large-scale human trial later this summer

An experimental coronavirus vaccine being tested by Pfizer Inc and its German partner BioNTech showed encouraging early results, the companies announced on Wednesday.

The trial recruited 45 people, who received either a low, medium or high dose of the vaccine in two shots or a placebo.

Volunteers given either the low or medium dose had immune responses in the range expected to be protective, when compared to COVID-19 survivors, according to the preliminary findings.

The results, which were published on pre-print site, have been submitted for publication in a scientific journal, but have not yet been peer-reviewed.

Researchers randomly gave 45 healthy volunteers either a low dose, a medium dose or a high dose of a coronavirus vaccine, or a placebo. Pictured: The first patient enrolled in Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore receives an injection, May 4

Those who received either two shots of the low or medium dose of the vaccine generated levels of neutralizing antibodies between 1.8 and 2.8 times greater than those seen in recovered patients (above)

‘We still have a ways to go and we’re testing other candidates as well,’ Philip Dormitzer, chief scientific officer for viral vaccines at Pfizer’s research laboratories, told STAT News.

‘However, what we can say at this point is there is a viable candidate based on immunogenicity and early tolerability safety data.’

The vaccine candidate from Pfizer and Biotech uses part of the pathogen’s genetic code to get the body to recognize the coronavirus and attack it if a person becomes infected.

For the study, three groups of 12 received either a 10-microgram dose, a 30-microgram dose or a 100-microgram dose. Nine were given a placebo.

The highest dose shot caused fevers in about half of the group, so a second shot wasn’t given.

Three weeks later, participants were given a second dose. Following that, 8.3 percent of the 10-microgram group and 75 percent of the 30-microgram reported fevers.

However, these side effects did not result in hospitalization, nor were considered life-threatening, and resolved after about one day.

The immunization generated not just antibodies against the virus but specifically neutralizing antibodies, meaning they stop the virus from infecting human cells.

Results showed the levels of neutralizing antibodies were between 1.8 and 2.8 times greater than those seen in recovered patients.

Volunteers who received one 100-microgram dose had lower levels of antibodies than those who were given two shots of the low or medium dose.

Following news of the preliminary results, shares of Pfizer rose by four percent on Wednesday.

The US pharmaceutical giant hopes to begin a large-scale trial this summer, but did not specify which jab it would be testing.

Around 200 vaccines are being developed around  the world with more than 15 currently in later-stage human trials such as AztraZeneca in partnership with Oxford University, Inovio and Moderna.

A number of pharmaceutical companies are expected to begin human trials later this summer including Johnson & Johnson, Merck and Sanofi.

Emergency: What are the counties and cities do not) adhere to the upper limit (?

Since the fear of a second infection wave have installed the Chancellor and the countries-leaders in parallel to the easing of protective measures in an emergency. The idea is to increase the number of new infections in a circle, within seven days, per 100,000 population of 50 or more, will be re-introducing more stringent protective measures in force. Through this emergency response mechanism to new foci of infection on site as quickly as possible will be deleted – without equal in the whole of Germany to shut down. Reproduction number R – how many people an Infected person is contagious?

The reproduction number R, also often called R-value bezeuchnet, is one of the Central indicators for the evaluation of the gradient of a wave of Infection. R indicates how many people are infects a of Infected in a given period of time, on average. The lower R is, the better:

Is R 1, is an Infected on average less than other people – and the epidemic is running out.

Is R 1, the number of new infections is constant and linear. The curve does not rise so (more) exponentially.

Is R 1, is an Infected in the Mediterranean more than other people – the number of daily new infections will be greater.

Note: The R-value is an estimate. It is based, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on the assumed number of COVID-19 new cases. The R-value is represented with a moving Four-day average. In this case, each value is averaged with the values of the three preceding days. The estimated values for the number of new cases and the R-estimate of earlier days may differ to reports from the information in the previous Situation, because every day, the total course is estimated on the basis of the currently available data. In addition, the RKI publishes a mean value for seven days. The data are updated daily and can be accessed here.
