Matthew Stafford and Wife Kelly Welcome Their Fourth Child: 'Our Family Became Complete'

Kelly announced her pregnancy nearly one year after she underwent a 12-hour brain operation in April 2019 when doctors found a benign tumor resting on her cranial nerves.

On the one-year anniversary since the surgery, Kelly shared an emotional note on Instagram, writing about the "hardest year" of her life.

"One year ago today. I really can’t express what I’m feeling today. My feelings are all over the place," she began. "The scheduled 6 hours, turning into 8 hours, turning into 10 hours, and finally doctors closing me up at the 12 hour mark.. friends and family anxiously awaiting wondering what is going on."

"What was going on was my doctor was saving everything.. hitting some unexpected bumps along the way, but taking all the time and precautions needed. Dr. Thompson is a truly special man and I’m incredibly thankful God led me to him and his team," she added. "I’m thankful for my family and friends who rallied behind me and encouraged me through the extremely tough times, which happened more than people knew in the past year."

She then gave Matthew a special shout-out, writing "You are the only reason I got through this past year. So many ups and downs and you were such a strong foundation to lean on.. even in some of your most difficult times. Thank you for getting me through."

"And my kids.. you’ll never know how much I pushed myself for you. How much I wanted to get back to the mommy you three deserved," Kelly continued. "You and your daddy are the major reason my recovery went the way it did. I love y’all so much."

"The hardest year of my life so far has passed. I am looking forward to the years to come knowing that they might bring new challenges, but ready for those challenges because not only do I now know how strong I am, but more so how much stronger I am with my husband and kids by my side," she ended her note. "Thank you. And I thank God this year is over and I live to see another!"

Humour may be her natural bent, but she has also fought a difficult health battle over the years. Celia Imrie has a complicated relationship with food after suffering from an eating disorder in her teens.

The comedian restricted her food in her youth after being told she was too big to become a dancer, and was admitted to hospital at the age of 14, weighing four stone.

At St Thomas’ Hospital in London, she was treated by psychiatrist William Sargant, who would use electroconvulsive therapy on his patients.

Celia recalled that traumatic time in an interview with The Mail On Sunday’s You magazine.

Referring to Sargant, she said: “I remember him with the face of a devil. There is a part of me that is still inside, fighting.”

Celia’s eating disorder has had lasting effects on her mental health.

Although she did decide to eat normally again in her younger years, she still does not like to eat in front of other people and, when on her own, is strict with herself, she revealed.

The actress said: “It goes on and on. I mean, I pretend it doesn’t but it sort of does. You just live with it.

“The sadness to me is if I see a girl in the street and it’s a very particular thinness – I would love to help them in some way.”

What is an eating disorder?

According to the NHS, an eating disorder is when you have an unhealthy attitude to food, which can take over your life and make you ill.

“It can involve eating too much or too little, or becoming obsessed with your weight and body shape,” explains the health body.

The most common eating disorders are:

  • Anorexia nervosa – when you try to keep your weight as low as possible by not eating enough food, exercising too much, or both
  • Bulimia – when you sometimes lose control and eat a lot of food in a very short amount of time (binging) and are then deliberately sick, use laxatives (medicine to help you go), restrict what you eat, or do too much exercise to try to stop yourself gaining weight
  • Binge eating disorder (BED) – when you regularly lose control of your eating, eat large portions of food all at once until you feel uncomfortably full, and are then often upset or guilty
  • Other specified feeding or eating disorder (OSFED) – when your symptoms do not exactly match those of anorexia, bulimia or binge eating disorder, but it does not mean it’s a less serious illness

“OSFED is the most common, then binge eating disorder and bulimia. Anorexia is the least common,” says the NHS.

How to treat it

A multi-faceted strategy is usually implemented to treat an eating disorder.

“It typically includes nutrition education, psychotherapy and medication,” explains Mayo Clinic.

Although, if your life is at risk, you may need immediate hospitalisation, it notes.

According to the NHS, treatment will be different depending on the type of eating disorder you have, but will usually involve some kind of talking therapy.

During talking therapy, a trained counsellor or therapist listens to you and helps you find your own answers to problems, without judging you.

“It may also involve working through a guided self-help programme if you have bulimia or binge eating disorder,” says the NHS.

Most people will be offered individual therapy, but those with binge eating disorder may be offered group therapy, notes the health body.

He said: “It is no secret that I have been living with mental illness for many decades.

“There were times when it was unbearable but with doctors and medications I have been able to live a wonderful, healthy and productive life with support from my family, friends and fans who have helped me through this journey.

“As you may know in the last year or so I’ve had three surgeries on my back. The surgeries were successful and I’m physically stronger than I’ve been in a long time.”

Brain went on to explain that his last round of surgery had left him feeling strange, however.

“I was not feeling like myself. Mentally insecure is how I’d describe it,” he said.

Mental illness, also called mental health disorders, is an umbrella term for a wide range of mental health conditions — disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behaviour.

Examples of mental illness include depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive behaviours.

According to Mayo Clinic, many people have mental health concerns from time to time.

A combination of an antidepressant and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) usually works better than having just one of these treatments, the health body explains.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) aims to help you understand your thoughts and behaviour, and how they affect you.

“CBT recognises that events in your past may have shaped you, but it concentrates mostly on how you can change the way you think, feel and behave in the present,” explains the NHS.

Boy waiting on transplant gets rocket bed from grandad to fulfil astronaut dream

Patrick Askham loves rocket ships and was amazed as he watched the SpaceX launch in May from his hospital bed.

The five-year-old is waiting on a life-saving organ transplant as he was born with an illness called gastroschisis – a condition where the bowels and other organs are on the outside of the body.

Watching the spaceship last month, he told his family he was determined to be an astronaut.

He asked grandad Garry Wilson, 55, if he could have a rocket ship bed.

After weeks of work, Garry surprised him on Friday evening frafter he was told to put on his space suit if he wanted to embark on a journey into outer space.

The space ship features a bed, a slide, a command centre and the words ‘Captain Patrick Askham’ painted above it.

He has since yet to take off his suit and has been journeying through infinite adventures in his brand new spacecraft.

Patrick said: ‘It’s awesome I love it so much.

‘It has a slide and a command centre and I can go on adventures in space now. I have seen so many massive super aliens already.

‘It’s the best thing ever and I can go into space whenever I want.’

‘I want to become an astronaut and visit all of the planets in the universe.’

When he was born, Patrick’s organs were outside his body and although they were placed inside him, they were so matted, they had to be removed just weeks later.

The brave boy battled through countless hospital appointments and surgeries despite his young age.

Due to his extremely short bowel, Patrick’s own remaining nine centimetre bowel is unable to absorb any nutrients so he is artificially fed via a broviac line which goes directly into his heart.

Patrick was placed on the donor registry for a bowel transplant in 2018 and by Christmas that year he received his first gift of life.

But sadly Patrick’s body went into severe rejection within nine days and developed PTLD – post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder – a type of cancer to lymph nodes.

He has now been left with no bowel due to his advanced condition.

But mum Michelle, 34, said despite being poorly Patrick is just a kid who has dreams and wants to play.

Michelle, from Leeds, West Yorkshire, said: ‘He’s a cool little boy but he’s quite poorly.

‘He has all these wonderful dreams but he’s life limited, so when he tells us about growing up and doing all sorts we get really emotional.

‘As parents all we want to do is to make sure all of his dreams come true.’

Following his request for a rocket ship, grandad Garry immediately got to work and spent a couple of hours each day in between work building the incredible bed.

He spent just £250 buying wood and paint to complete it.

The family initially thought they’d just prop bunk beds and paint a rocket ship but grandad Garry went ‘above and beyond’.

Michelle added: ‘Patrick loved it so much he hasn’t taken his space suit off yet and he keeps going on adventures in outer space.

‘We kept it all from him so it was a massive surprise.

‘And on the day of the surprise we told him he needed to get into proper attire to be able to embark into space.

‘I cried so much because he just looked so happy and he really looked like he was ready to go to space.

‘He spends so much time in the hospital and the rest of it at home so when he’s here we want to give him everything we can.

‘We try to do nice things for him because he can’t go on slides in the park like other kids because he’d be in danger.

‘As much as he’s poorly he’s also just a normal boy who has dreams and wants to play.’

Sadly parks and playgrounds aren’t safe for Patrick as he has many tubes and bags tucked under his clothes which keep him alive.

The mum-of-three said: ‘He’s got wires, tubes and bags underneath his clothes which mean he can’t really go in a park and play because it could get stuck.

‘So to make something like that at home where he can be a kid it’s just amazing.

‘He’s my little hero and now he’s my little space hero.

‘He hasn’t stopped telling me he’s going on an adventure and he’s so excited – it makes me so happy.’

Best supplements for weight loss: The popular supplement proven to increase fat burning

Subcutaneous fat is the deepest layer of the skin which – believe it or not – does serve a purpose.

It’s one way that the body stores energy, and it’s used as padding to protect the muscles and bones from the impact of a fall.

An antioxidant, EGCG, has been shown to aid fat burning, and it’s abundant in green tea supplements.

Researchers from the Department of Chemical Biology, at the State University of New Jersey, looked into this link.

They found that EGCG can help inhibit an enzyme from breaking down the hormone norepinephrine – a fat-burning hormone.

When the enzyme is stopped from breaking down norepinephrine, the amount of norepinephrine increases thereby promoting fat breakdown and weight loss.

A research team from the Department of Physiology looked into this link between green tea extract and weight loss in more depth.

They conducted a randomised, controlled trial that involved 60 obese subjects.

The NHS defines obesity as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 to 39.9 – try the healthy weight calculator here.

All participants consumed a diet containing three meals for 12 weeks, prepared by the Nutritional Unit at Srinagarind Hospital.

The diet consisted of 65 percent carbohydrates, 15 percent protein, and 20 percent fat.

The volunteers’ body weights and BMI were measured before the study began, four weeks in, then at the eight-week mark and at the end of the study.

The only difference in consumption between the participants was that some were given green tea extract to consume, while others were not.

By the eighth week, the results revealed a significant difference in body weight between those given green tea extract and those who had taken placebos.

This trend continued by the 12th week, with the researchers concluding that “green tea can reduce body weight” in obese people.

Green tea extract is available in supplement form that can be bought in health stores, such as Holland and Barrett or ordered online.

The catechin EGCG is a type of polyphenol that is the main active ingredient, as outlined earlier.

And, as presented, evidence suggests that supplementing with green tea can aid weight management.

If you do take green tea supplements, the exercise and eating less still needs to be in motion.

The Best Water Workouts You Should Try This Summer

When you think of working out, there’s a good chance running, weight lifting, spin class and some tire-pushing, heavy duty boot camp come to mind — but what about water workouts? The pool is one of the best places you can go to get an overall cardiovascular workout that’s also gentle on your body — especially during the summer season when it’s almost too hot to function outside — that will leave you feeling cool and strong in all the right ways. Plus, the post-workout chlorine smell is a bit nicer than your regular dry-land workout sweat, if you ask us.

What are water workouts?

Simply put, water workouts are any cardiovascular or conditioning program you can do in the pool. The workouts are made for any fitness level and are easy to customize or adapt to specific health conditions or injuries. Plus, you can do these workouts with or without equipment. If you choose to add resistance, some of the more common ways to up the intensity of your workout are flotation belts, kickboards, water weights and pool noodles.

As far as the types of classes or workouts to choose from, the possibilities are endless. Aqua cycling, deep-water running, shallow-water boot camp and circuit-format group exercise classes are just a sample of what’s available.

One of the more popular water workouts is aqua jogging, or deep-water running. Performed with a flat belt around your waist, Aaptiv trainer Ed Hall tells SheKnows that this exercise mimics running in water but with the toes pointed to help keep your head above water. It is ideal for maintaining an aerobic base without the impact of running on land.

What are the benefits of water workouts?

Bet you didn’t know that swimming is the fourth-most popular activity in the United States. Water workouts have been around a lot longer than some of the current fitness trends, and they don’t appear to be dying down anytime soon.

In a 2007 study published in the Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Prevention, participants reported that they enjoy exercising in the water more than on land. Plus, you can exercise longer in the pool since the water protects your joints and muscles from a lot of the pain you may experience running or in a boot camp-type of class.

“Water workouts are safe for most people, as the low- to no-impact movements and hydrostatic pressure can be therapeutic for those with injuries or other limiting factors,” certified personal trainer and AEA-certified aqua group fitness instructor Dr. Kelly Morgan, who has a Ph.D. in health communications, tells SheKnows.

But water workouts are not just for people who need the pool to help them manage a health condition. Even the fittest will be challenged in the pool. Don’t believe us?

Rather than hitting the pavement or pushing weight around for your next workout, head to the water instead. You might be surprised just how challenging a swimming-based workout can be.

Which water workouts are the best?

Though most types of movement — in or out of the water — are better than nothing and good for your health, some water workouts pack more of a punch than others.

“Depending on your fitness goals, some types of water workouts will be better-suited than others,” says Hall. If you are a weightlifter, Hall recommends a shallow-water boot camp class that uses noodles, float boards and pool dumbbells because it works your muscle concentrically and not eccentrically (less gravity). This means you are less likely to get sore, you can work harder and get the most out of your workout.

Classes that incorporate aqua jogging or pure water aerobics classes focus more on cardiovascular conditioning. But regardless of the type of workout you choose, Morgan says the benefit of exercising in the water is that the water resistance adds a strength-training element to all movement.

Should you join a class or workout on your own?

If you need that extra boost of motivation to work out or you’re looking for the social aspect a group class provides, joining a class may be right for you. However, there is no need to do water workouts as part of a large group. All the workouts you do in a class can be done on your own.

If you’re new to swimming or water-based workouts, taking a few classes to familiarize yourself with the different exercises might be helpful.

“Someone can demonstrate the types of exercise to do and how to perform them correctly and in the proper order,” Hall says. Then you can take what you learned in the class and create your own workouts. Knowing how to do a water workout will come in handy if you’re traveling or on vacation and need to use the hotel pool to exercise.

Sample water workouts

The best part about working out in the pool is that you have a variety of workouts to choose from. Here is a sample swim/strength plan Louise Love, assistant director of aquatics at Missouri State University, shared with SheKnows:

Swim/strength workout

  • Warm up 200 meters (one lap is typically 50 meters)
  • Tread water with your hands up for one minute, 30 seconds
  • Swim 100 meters
  • Tread water with your arms only for one minute, 30 seconds
  • Swim 100 meters
  • Tread water with arms and legs for one minute, 30 seconds
  • Swim 100 meters
  • 15 push-ups (out of water)
  • 15 squats (out of water)
  • Swim 300 meters (pace yourself)
  • Planks (out of water)
  • Center hold for 30 seconds
  • Side hold for 15 seconds
  • Other side hold for 15 seconds
  • Cool-down: Swim 200 meters, slowing heart rate down by doing easy strokes or swimming on your back

Cardio workout

  • Jog in place
  • Jog moving forward, back, right, then left
  • Jog with high knees moving forward, back, right, then left
  • Jog kicking your butt moving forward, back, right, then left
  • Low front kicks in place, to the front
  • Low kicks moving forward, back, right, then left
  • Waist-high kicks in place, to the front
  • Low front kicks in place, legs going out at a 45-degree angle
  • Waist-high front kicks in place, legs going out at a 45-degree angle
  • Kick to the back, lifting your legs as high as possible, in place
  • Jumping jacks, getting low and keeping your body in the water
  • Jumping jacks moving forward and backward (repeat two times)
  • Jog in place
  • Sprint in place for 15 seconds (repeat three times)
  • Cross-country ski — left arm goes forward, left leg goes back then right arm goes forward, right leg goes back. Ski to the right then left (repeat two times)
  • Low front kicks in place to recover
  • Repeat all above — you can wear aqua gloves to add resistance, but when doing so, keep fingers spread and hands open

So, the next time you think you can skip your workout because it’s too hot, try and find a pool and hop in — there are plenty of fun ways to exercise!

High blood pressure symptoms: How do you know if you have high blood pressure?

High blood pressure puts a strain on your blood vessels, heart, and other organs such as your brain, kidneys and eyes. If you aren’t careful, high blood pressure can increase your risk of serious and life-threatening conditions.

How do you know if you have high blood pressure?

Most of the time there are no symptoms of high blood pressure, which is why many people have it and don’t know.

You may have heard that people with high blood pressure will experience symptoms such as nervousness, sweating, and facial flushing, but this is a myth.

High blood pressure is a silent killer. Even though it is largely symptomless, you need to keep an eye on your blood pressure.

However, according to, there are a few of symptoms that may be indirectly related to but not always caused by high blood pressure. These include:

• Facial flushing
• Dizziness

Blood spots in the eye are common among diabetes suffers and people with high blood pressure, but neither condition is responsible for the blood spots.

Facial flushing happens when blood blood vessels in the face dilate.

It can occur unpredictably, in response to triggers such as cold weather, spicy food, or skincare products, or it can be brought on by emotional stress.

All of these things can raise blood pressure temporarily, but high blood pressure does not cause facial flushing.

Dizziness is often a side effect of some blood pressure medications rather than high blood pressure itself.

But the only true way to find out if you have high blood pressure is to have your blood pressure checked.

Blood pressure is recorded with 2 numbers:

  • The systolic pressure (the higher number) is the force at which your heart pumps blood around your body.
  • The diastolic pressure (the lower number) is the resistance to the blood flow in the blood vessels.

Both numbers are measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg).

According to the NHS, high blood pressure is considered to be 140/90mmHg or higher (or 150/90mmHg or higher if you’re over the age of 80).

Ideal blood pressure is usually considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg.

Blood pressure readings between 120/80mmHg and 140/90mmHg could mean you’re at risk of developing high blood pressure if you do not take steps to keep your blood pressure under control.

However, it is important to remember that blood pressure will be slightly different.

Always check with your doctor if you are concerned about your result, because what’s considered low or high for you may be normal for someone else.

How to check your blood pressure

A blood pressure test can be taken in at your GP surgery, at some pharmacies, as part of your NHS Health Check, in some workplaces, or home.

The main way to check your blood pressure used to be a stethoscope, arm cuff, pump and dial.

Nowadays, automatic devices with sensors and digital displays are commonly used.

It’s best to sit down with your back supported and legs uncrossed for at least 5 minutes before the test.

Roll up your sleeves or remove any long-sleeved clothing so the cuff can be placed around your upper arm.

Try to relax and avoid talking while the test is carried out.

The NHS instructions read:
During the test:
• you hold out one of your arms so it’s at the same level as your heart, and the cuff is placed around it – your arm should be supported in this position with a cushion or the arm of a chair, for example
• the cuff is pumped up to restrict the blood flow in your arm – this squeezing may feel a bit uncomfortable, but only lasts a few seconds
• the pressure in the cuff is slowly released and detectors sense vibrations in your arteries – a doctor will use a stethoscope to detect these if your blood pressure is measured manually
• the pressure in the cuff is recorded at 2 points as the blood flow starts to return to your arm – these measurements are used to give your blood pressure reading
